Preparation for Colonoscopy

In anticipation of a colonoscopy, each patient must first schedule a consultation with the surgeon in the office. At that time, the procedure will be scheduled and you will have the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. A representative from the hospital will contact you to schedule any pre-surgical testing, if needed, and to tell you when and where to report on the day of the exam.

Purchase:   – one-10 oz. bottle of Citrate of Magnesia (not cherry)
-Dulcolax tablets
- one regular Fleet enema

TWO DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR EXAMINATION:

- Begin a soft diet – no roughage
- Take 3 Dulcolax tablets at 8:00 pm

ONE DAY PRIOR TO YOUR EXAMINATION:

Begin a clear fluid diet. Acceptable clear fluids include: apple juice, Hi-C, Kool Aid, soda pop, Gatorade, clear
chicken and beef broth or bouillon, clear non-red Jello-O, Popsicles, coffee, tea (sugar is permitted). NO milk or milk products.
-At 4:00 – 5:00 pm, drink 10 oz. of Citrate of Magnesia
- At 6:00 – 7:00 pm, take 4 Dulcolax tablets
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight

THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT:

Before leaving the house, use plain water enemas until the return is clear. You may use a Fleet Enema, but if the return is not clear, fill the bottle with warm water and continue until the return is clear.

REMEMBER: NO FOOD OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT UNTIL AFTER THE PROCEDURE!
