A CAT scan is a radiologic procedure that is used to obtain high definition images of body organs, joints, brain and various other areas. It is a non-invasive test. Your doctor may request that you have an IV started and a contrast medium injected into the IV.  Contrast is used in the event that your physician has determined that contrast would provide the necessary diagnostic images needed in order to best diagnose your particular condition.

CAT SCAN PREPARATION:

BRAIN (with iodine), SOFT TISSUE, NECK OR CTA (CT ANGIOGRAPHY)Nothing to eat or drink for two hours prior to exam except for oral medications. You may take medications with a small amount of water.  Remove all hairpins, dentures, hearing aids or any other metallic objects.

CHEST (with iodine)

Nothing to eat or drink for two hours prior to exam except for oral medications. You may take your medications with a small amount of water.  Remove bra and any jewelry from neck or chest area.

ABDOMEN

Nothing to eat or drink for three hours prior to exam except for oral medications. You may take your medications with a small amount of water.  Around forty-five minutes before your appointment, drink one bottle of oral barium (can be refrigerated).  Remove bra and metallic objects (belts, zippers, buckles, etc.)

PELVIS OR ABDOMEN/PELVIS  COMBINATION

Nothing to eat or drink for four hours prior to exam except for oral medications. You may take your medications with a small amount of water. Two hours prior to your appointment, drink one bottle of oral barium (can be refrigerated). Drink another bottle one half hour before exam. Remove all metallic objects (belts, zippers, buckles, etc.)

CT UROGRAM

Nothing to eat or drink for three hours prior to exam except for oral medications. You may take your medications with a small amount of water. It is NOT necessary for you to drink oral barium for this examination.

ABDOMEN/PELVIS FOR RENAL LITHIASIS (KIDNEY STONES) ONLY

No specific preparation is necessary. Remove metallic objects (belts, zippers, buckles, etc.)

NO SPECIFIC PREARATION IS REQUIRED FOR EXTREMETIES, C-SPINES, T-SPINES, L-SPINES OR ANY OTHER EXAM THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE INTRAVENOUS CONTRAST

You will still need to remove all metallic objects, however.

If you are a diabetic taking any form of metformin, or have an allergy to iodine, please be sure you have been given preparation instructions prior to your arrival.

If this is a follow-up from a previous study, please bring prior report with you.

If you are over 60 years old, or a diabetic patient and will be receiving an iodine injection, we MUST have a recent BUN/creatinine level blood test result from your physician drawn within the past three months.
